Search Engines Overview

The search engines industry is one of three targeted areas for Contrieve's RevBot technology.  With RevBots, search engines can evolve into much improved "result engines."

The state of search engine processes today

Search engines have become an indispensable utility for Internet users. More than eight in ten American Internet users have gone to search engines to find information on the Web.  According to Arbitron and Edison Media Research, 20% of all Americans feel that the Internet is the most essential medium in their lives.  More than one in four U.S. Internet users employs search engines on a typical day.  Only email usage outranks search-engine queries as an online activity.

Given the rise and ubiquity of searching, search technology has not been able to keep up with the demand for relevant data.  Studies indicate that up to 74% of searches are unsuccessful.  Only 1 in 20 visitors scroll to the second page of search results, and 22% of searches produce no results at all.

There are over 30 million domain names in the Unites States alone, 80 million worldwide.  The majority of these websites have indicated that they would like their site categorized and searchable by search engines.  Yet, search engines serve less than 1% of the total web pages that make up the Internet.  With today’s technology, delays approaching thirty days or more are not uncommon for even some of the largest websites in the world.  Of the 550 billion web pages currently making up the Internet, a significant portion of that content is locked behind corporate firewalls and not indexed at all due to the lack of security provided by the current data gathering process.  In other words, search engines have done a poor job in serving their customers and providing meaningful data.  Search engines have lacked incentive to change because revenue models to date have focused on advertising, not searching as the key driver of revenue.

Value proposition

Search engines control the Internet searching process, limiting the options of the actual owners of information and content.  Contrieve’s RevBot technology improves that process.  With a RevBot, a network can utilize an easy, automated and cost effective process for controlling information flow.  A RevBot enabled network sends information to a searchable database as often as needed.  Delays in presenting new information are reduced or eliminated.  By using RevBots, a site can have its changes reflect in search engines in a matter of minutes as compared to an average of six weeks, a 50,000 times improvement.  This makes possible for the site to promote content daily or even hourly - for example, content relating to quickly arranged sales, contests, specific events and current topics.
